DeLonghi Error 2257 — What It Means & How to Fix
No Water / Prime Pump fault on Magnifica S/XS (2257.1 & 2262 variants)
-
What Is Error 2257?
Error 2257 (often shown as 2257.1, and very close to the 2262 variant) is DeLonghi's "no water / prime pump" fault. The machine's flow meter isn't registering water movement when the pump runs. Nine times out of ten it's a simple air lock: the tank ran dry, or the machine was moved, and air in the intake line stops the pump from priming.
On rare occasions, 2257 points to a clogged intake filter, a stuck flow-meter impeller, or a pump that's losing output. The standard priming routine clears the majority of cases in under two minutes.

Affected DeLonghi Models
- DeLonghi Magnifica S (ECAM22.110, 23.120, 23.460)
- DeLonghi Magnifica XS
- DeLonghi Magnifica EVO (ECAM29x — shows 2262 more commonly)
- Dinamica / Dinamica Plus
- Some PrimaDonna models
-
Common Causes
- Air lock after the tank emptied — the #1 cause; running the tank dry pulls air into the intake line
- Tank not fully reseated — the valve at the base of the tank doesn't open if the tank isn't pushed in firmly
- Intake filter clogged — limescale or water-filter debris has sealed the mesh at the base of the tank
- Flow meter stuck — impeller seized with scale, pump runs but board sees no flow
- Weakening vibration pump — classic at 6+ years of daily use; output drops below flow-meter threshold
-
DIY Reset Procedure (Try This First)
- Fill the water tank to the MAX line with fresh water
- Remove the tank, inspect the mesh at the base for scale/debris — rinse under the faucet if dirty
- Reseat the tank firmly — you should feel the valve click when it's fully home
- Place a large mug under the hot-water spout (not the coffee spout)
- Press hot water — let it run for 30 seconds or until flow is steady and vigorous
- Repeat steps 4–5 two more times to fully purge air
- Run 2–3 blank espresso cycles (brew without putting in a cup of beans) to purge the coffee circuit
- Power-cycle: off at the rear switch, wait 30 seconds, on
-
If That Doesn't Work
- If water flow from the hot-water spout is weak or sputtering, the pump is likely failing
- If the pump sounds strained or hums without producing flow, the impeller or piston is bad
- If flow is fine from the spout but 2257 still triggers during espresso, the flow meter is stuck or failing
- If the machine was recently descaled and the error appeared immediately, the descaler may have dislodged scale that's now blocking a hose — requires chassis inspection
-
When to Call Professional Service
- Error 2257 returns after 3 complete priming cycles
- Weak or sputtering water flow from the hot-water spout
- Strained pump buzz with no water output
- Pool of water under the machine (pump seal leak)
- Error appeared immediately after a descale
