DeLonghi Error 1512 — What It Means & How to Fix
General Alarm subtype on Magnifica S: causes, brew-unit reset, and when to service
-
What Is Error 1512?
Error 1512 is a General Alarm subtype on DeLonghi Magnifica S machines, closely related to Error 1101. Where 1101 typically fires at startup or idle when the brew unit isn't in the home position, 1512 fires mid-cycle when the brew unit doesn't reach its expected target position in time. Think of it as 1101's "action" sibling.
The fix path is similar: start with a brew-unit reseat and clean. About half of 1512 cases clear that way. The other half tend to be hardware — a worn position sensor, a dying brew motor, or a piston seal that's causing excess drag.

Affected DeLonghi Models
- DeLonghi Magnifica S (primary — ECAM22/23)
- DeLonghi Magnifica XS
- DeLonghi Magnifica EVO (occasional)
- Some PrimaDonna S / Class models
- Dinamica / Dinamica Plus (rare)
-
Common Causes
- Brew unit piston drag — old seals or caked grounds add friction the motor can't overcome in time
- Brew unit position sensor drift — the microswitch reports "not home" when it actually is (or vice versa)
- Brew motor torque loss — motor still runs but can't finish the cycle fast enough
- Loose brew-unit harness connector — intermittent signal back to the board
- Control board timing drift — rare, typically on machines 8+ years old
-
DIY Reset Procedure (Try This First)
- Power the machine OFF at the rear hard switch
- Open the service door and remove the brew unit (press the two red release buttons)
- Rinse under warm water — work the black lever to move the piston back and forth until it slides freely
- If the piston is sticky or stiff, soak in a cup of fresh water with a cleaning tablet for 15 minutes, then rinse
- Inspect the piston seal (the round black o-ring at the top of the piston) for cracks or hardness
- Air-dry 5 minutes, reinsert until the firm click
- Run one hot-water flush, then attempt a single espresso
- If Error 1512 returns, repeat once more with extra attention to the piston lever moving smoothly
-
If That Doesn't Work
- Brew unit piston seal is likely worn — add friction that keeps timing out
- Brew motor torque is dropping — often makes a slightly weaker sound on each cycle
- Position microswitch is dirty or worn and reports the wrong position
- The brew-unit harness to the chassis connector has backed out
-
When to Call Professional Service
- Error 1512 returns after 2 clean reseats
- Brew motor sounds progressively weaker each cycle
- Piston lever feels notably stiff even after cleaning
- Error 1512 appears alongside 1101 or 1026
- The machine completes the cycle physically but still throws 1512 at the end
