General Alarm 1101
What it means: Error code 1101 is a catch-all "General Alarm" that DeLonghi displays when the control board detects a fault it can't isolate. It's the single most common code we see on Magnifica service tickets.
Common causes:
- Brew unit stuck mid-cycle (not returned to home position)
- Brew-unit position sensor (Hall-effect sensor) failure or contamination
- Loose or corroded internal wiring connector on the brew-unit harness
- Debris (coffee fines, grinder chaff) jammed in the brew-unit rails
Diagnosis steps:
- Power off, wait 30 seconds, power back on (clears transient faults)
- Open the service door and remove the brew unit — rinse under warm water, let air-dry
- Check that the brew unit's arrows are aligned to the home position before reinserting
- Inspect the brew-unit sensor window (behind where the unit sits) for coffee dust — clean with a dry microfiber
- If the error returns within 3 brews, book service — the sensor or harness likely needs replacement
-
Grinder Stuck or Not Grinding
Common causes: Bean oil residue jamming the burrs, foreign object (staple, stone, popcorn kernel) wedged between burrs, worn burrs (after ~5,000 brews), or grinder motor failure.
Fix steps:
- Power off. Empty the bean hopper completely
- Vacuum the grinder chamber with a narrow crevice tool — get every bean fragment
- Set the grind dial to the coarsest setting (7) before trying to grind again
- If you hear the motor hum but no grinding, a foreign object is likely stuck — DO NOT force it; the gearbox will strip
- Check burrs for shiny, rounded edges (indicator of wear) vs. sharp crisp edges (still good)
Call us if: the motor hums without grinding, or the grind dial won't turn freely. Forcing either will destroy the grinder assembly, which is a $150+ part.
-
Dry Grounds / No Crema
Common causes: Worn infuser (brew unit) O-rings, worn grinder burrs producing inconsistent particle size, or incorrect coffee-strength setting.
Cleaning steps:
- Remove the brew unit, rinse thoroughly under warm water
- Inspect the two O-rings on the infuser — if flattened, cracked, or shiny, replace them
- For newer Magnifica S, Eletta, Dinamica, PrimaDonna S+, and Dedica: use DeLonghi infuser kit 7313251451
- For older ESAM-generation Magnifica (373 models): use infuser kit 7313251441
- Increase the coffee strength setting and/or the cup size on the panel — extra-strong aroma setting uses more grounds
- Run a grinder fineness test — dial the grind 1 step finer; wait 2 brews before evaluating
-
No Water Flow / "Fill Water Tank" Error
Common causes: Air lock in the pump line, clogged intake filter on the water tank, scale buildup in the heating circuit, or pump failure.
Priming steps:
- Remove the water tank, rinse, and refill to MAX — check that the tank seats firmly on the valve
- Activate the hot-water dispenser with a large mug under the wand — let water flow until steady
- Repeat 2–3 times to purge air from the pump
- If you hear the pump running but no water comes out, run a descale cycle immediately
- Pump failure sounds like: loud, strained buzzing or rapid click-click-click with no water movement
-
Leaking Water
Drip tray overflowing:
- Normal: rinse water after each brew cycle is captured here — empty every 2–3 days
- Abnormal: tray fills within a single brew — 3-way valve or brew unit seals are leaking
Leak from the brew unit seals:
- Replace the infuser O-ring kit (7313251451 or 7313251441 depending on model)
- Inspect the brew unit's upper gasket — replace if hardened
Leak from the water tank seal:
- Clean and re-seat the tank — debris on the valve is the usual culprit
- Replace the tank valve O-ring if leakage persists
Internal leak (puddle under the machine):
- Stop using the machine immediately — water inside the chassis damages the control board
- Common culprits: boiler fitting, thermoblock gasket, hot-water circuit solenoid
- Professional repair required
-
Descaling Cycle Stuck or Not Starting
Common causes: Interrupted descale cycle, wrong descaler type, or water tank not seated properly.
- If a descale cycle was interrupted, fully power cycle the machine and restart it — the machine will resume where it left off
- Use only DeLonghi EcoDecalk or a citric-acid based descaler — NEVER vinegar (damages boiler gaskets) and NEVER CLR (too harsh)
- Ratio: 1 bottle of EcoDecalk (100ml) to the MAX line on the tank
- Frequency: every 2–3 months, or when the descale light prompts you. Hard-water areas (East Bay, Oakland): monthly
- After descaling, run 2–3 full tanks of fresh water through to rinse — residue tastes bitter
-
Brew Unit Stuck / Won't Remove
Why it happens: The brew unit parks in a specific home position; if power was cut mid-cycle, it may be frozen mid-stroke and won't release.
- Gentle wiggle technique: with the service door open, press the two red release buttons and rock the brew unit side-to-side — never pull straight out with force
- If stuck, try a warm-water soak: pour a cup of warm water into the drip tray area to soften coffee compaction
- Power cycle with the service door open — the control board may auto-home the brew unit on next power-on
- Do NOT force with pliers or a screwdriver. The internal plastic pawl breaks at the slightest side-load, converting a 5-minute fix into a $180 brew-unit replacement
-
"Empty Circuit" Error (PrimaDonna Avant)
What it means: The water circuit has lost prime and the flowmeter sees no flow. Most common after refilling an empty tank or moving the machine.
- Confirm water tank is full and fully seated
- Place a mug under the hot-water spout (not the coffee spout)
- Hold the hot-water button — water should flow within 10 seconds
- If no flow, power cycle and repeat
- Repeat until water streams steadily; the error will clear automatically
- If the error persists after 3 priming attempts, the priming pump or flowmeter has failed — book service
-
Milk Frother (LatteCrema) Not Frothing
Common causes: Milk residue inside the carafe tubing, clogged air-intake valve, or scale in the steam circuit.
- After every use, run the CLEAN function on the carafe (turn dial to CLEAN position, press button)
- Disassemble the carafe weekly — soak all parts in warm soapy water, scrub the siphon tube with a bottle brush
- The air-intake adjustment dial must be rotated through all positions occasionally to keep the valve free
- If froth is thin despite cold milk, descale the steam circuit — scale in the steam line kills froth quality
- Use whole milk (3.25%) or full-fat oat milk for best froth; skim foams thin
