DeLonghi Error 1026 — What It Means & How to Fix
"Grind too fine" General Alarm on Magnifica S/XS/EVO: causes, cleaning, and when to service
-
What Is Error 1026?
Error 1026 is a DeLonghi General Alarm that fires when the machine tries to push water through the puck and fails to reach expected flow within its allotted time. The display usually reads "Grind too fine — adjust grinder and press OK," though the underlying cause is broader than grind size alone.
In practice, 1026 means one of three things: (1) the grind genuinely is too fine and the puck has choked; (2) the infuser (brew unit) is clogged with old grounds and oil, creating resistance; or (3) pump pressure has dropped. The vast majority clear with a grind adjustment and a proper infuser cleaning.

Affected DeLonghi Models
- DeLonghi Magnifica S (ECAM22.110, 23.120, 23.460)
- DeLonghi Magnifica XS
- DeLonghi Magnifica EVO (ECAM29x)
- Dinamica / Dinamica Plus
- Some PrimaDonna S / Class models
-
Common Causes
- Grinder set too fine — most frequent cause after a new bean or humidity shift
- Infuser clogged with coffee oil and grounds — classic after 2–3 months without a deep clean
- Brew unit seals swollen or worn — extra friction raises back-pressure
- Pump weakening — unable to reach target pressure, so timeout fires
- Too much coffee in the chamber — oily/old beans overfill and choke the puck
-
DIY Reset Procedure (Try This First)
- With the grinder running, turn the grind dial one or two clicks clockwise (toward a coarser setting — DeLonghi grind dials only adjust when the burrs are spinning; forcing when idle damages the mechanism)
- Power off, open the service door, and remove the brew unit via the two red buttons
- Rinse the infuser under warm water — work the black lever to move the piston and flush grounds from the screen
- If the mesh is dark brown, soak the infuser in a cup of fresh water with a DeLonghi cleaning tablet for 15 minutes, then rinse
- Air-dry 5 minutes, reinsert until you hear a firm click
- Run one hot-water flush (no coffee) to clear the lines
- Make a test espresso — adjust grind finer one click at a time only if flow is fast and watery
-
If That Doesn't Work
If 1026 returns after a coarsen + clean:
- Your infuser seals may be swollen or glazed — a replacement kit (part 7313251451 for new-gen ECAM Magnifica S / Eletta / Dinamica / PrimaDonna S / Dedica, or 7313251441 for older ESAM 373-series) restores factory tolerances
- The pump may be weakening — a pressure-test on the bench confirms it
- Rarely, the flow meter on the intake has slowed down and is reporting incorrect flow — requires replacement
-
When to Call Professional Service
- Error 1026 returns within 1–2 shots after a clean and coarsen
- Extraction time has gotten progressively longer over weeks (classic pump weakening)
- You hear a loud, strained pump buzz during extraction
- Visible water pooling under the machine (pump seal leak)
- 1026 appears alongside 1101 or other brew-unit errors
