DeLonghi Error 1454 — What It Means & How to Fix
Grinder Jammed / Grinder Error on Magnifica S/XS/EVO: causes, DIY clean-out, and service
-
What Is Error 1454?
Error 1454 is DeLonghi's "Grinder Jammed" or "Grinder Error" code. The control board monitors grinder motor current during each grind cycle. If the current spikes above the stall threshold — or the motor doesn't turn at all — the board cuts power and throws 1454 to protect the grinder from burning out.
Nine times out of ten, the cause is a mechanical blockage you can clear yourself: caked bean oil, a stone or staple from the bag, or simply too-fine grind settings choking the chute. The remaining cases point to a failing grinder motor or cracked burr, which is a professional repair.

Affected DeLonghi Models
- DeLonghi Magnifica S (ECAM22/23)
- DeLonghi Magnifica XS
- DeLonghi Magnifica EVO (ECAM29x)
- DeLonghi Dinamica / Dinamica Plus
- Other ECAM super-automatics with built-in conical burr grinder
-
Common Causes
- Bean oil buildup — oily dark roasts coat the burrs and chamber; eventually the burrs bind
- Foreign object in the beans — small stones, staples from the bag, or unground bean pits wedge between the burrs
- Worn or cracked burrs — after thousands of cycles, burrs lose their edge and the motor overworks
- Grind set too fine — especially after switching to a light roast, the chute chokes and the motor stalls
- Grinder motor failure — less common, but terminal; usually accompanied by no motor sound at all
-
DIY Reset Procedure (Try This First)
- Power the machine OFF at the rear hard switch
- Remove the bean hopper by pulling straight up (some models require a quarter-turn of the lid first)
- Vacuum out any loose beans and the grind chamber — use a shop-vac with a narrow nozzle
- Twist the upper burr locking ring counter-clockwise and lift the upper burr out (consult your model manual for exact direction; most models use a gray plastic ring with arrows)
- Brush both burrs with a dry nylon brush — look for stones, staples, or glass between the teeth
- Vacuum the burr chamber again — any debris here jams the next grind
- Reassemble: seat the upper burr, twist the locking ring back to its original mark, reinstall the hopper
- Before refilling beans, turn the grind dial two clicks coarser than your last setting
- Refill beans, power cycle, and run one grind (use pre-ground bypass first if available)
Never use water on the grinder. Burrs are hardened steel and will rust within hours.
-
If That Doesn't Work
- Burrs may be cracked — a visible chip on either burr means replacement
- The grinder motor bushing may be worn, causing wobble and intermittent stalls
- The grinder motor itself may be failing — you'll hear a weak buzz or nothing on grind attempts
- The control board's current-sense resistor has drifted and is throwing 1454 falsely (rare)
-
When to Call Professional Service
- Error 1454 returns within 1–2 grinds after a thorough clean-out
- No grinder motor sound at all when the machine tries to grind
- Visible damage to the burrs (chipped edges, corrosion)
- Grinder motor runs but no grounds come out the chute
- The machine smells of hot plastic when attempting to grind
