How the DeLonghi Grinder Works
DeLonghi super-automatic machines have an integrated burr grinder — the motor, burr set, and adjustment mechanism are sold as one assembly. Conical steel burrs grind whole beans to a consistent particle size, which is then dosed directly into the brew unit. The grind-coarseness adjustment ring controls the gap between the burrs.
Unlike standalone grinders where just the burrs can be replaced, the DeLonghi super-automatic grinder is designed as a single serviceable assembly. When burrs wear out or the motor fails, the whole unit is swapped.

Signs the Grinder Assembly Needs Replacement
- Error codes 1026 or 1454 — grind-too-fine or grinder-jammed errors that persist after cleaning (see our 1026 and 1454 guides)
- Loud rattling or grinding noise during the grind cycle — often indicates a foreign object has damaged a burr
- No grounds produced even though you can hear the motor running
- Inconsistent grind — espresso quality varies dramatically shot to shot despite no change in settings
- Grind adjustment no longer works — turning the ring doesn't change extraction
- Burning smell during grinding — motor is overworking due to blockage or worn bearings
Check first: Remove the bean hopper and clear any foreign objects (pebbles, stems, clumped coffee). Run the grinder cleaning cycle 2–3 times. If the error and noise persist, the assembly likely needs replacement. -

Grinder Assembly Replacement Overview
Difficulty: Moderate — requires partial disassembly of the machine top/front panel.
Time: 45–75 minutes for a first-time repair.
- Empty the bean hopper and remove it. Run the grinder to clear remaining beans.
- Unplug the machine and remove the top panel (usually 2–4 screws).
- Locate the grinder assembly — it sits directly below the bean hopper, connected to the main body by a motor harness and a grounds chute.
- Disconnect the motor harness connector.
- Remove the assembly mounting screws (typically 3–4 Torx or Phillips).
- Pull the assembly free, taking care not to tear the grounds chute gasket.
- Install the new assembly in reverse order, ensuring the grounds chute aligns correctly.
- Run 3–5 grind cycles before brewing to season the new burrs with bean oils.

When Professional Service Makes Sense
Grinder replacement is a good DIY candidate — but bring the machine in if:
- The grinder assembly is damaged (cracked housing, bent shaft) from a hard foreign object
- The error persists after replacing the grinder — may indicate a drive gear or sensor issue
- You're seeing multiple errors alongside the grinder problem
- The machine is a higher-end model (PrimaDonna, Eletta) where internal access is more complex
