E61 Group Head Dripping After Shot
What's happening: The E61 is a mechanical group — a cam-driven paddle shifts water flow and pre-infusion. A post-shot drip means the mushroom valve isn't seating, or the group gasket is failing.
- Mushroom valve check: remove the shower screen and dispersion block. The mushroom valve sits directly above the screen — if it's covered in scale or the seat is pitted, water leaks past it continuously
- Fix: full E61 rebuild kit (mushroom valve, cam seals, springs) — ~$60 part, 90-minute bench job
- Group gasket: if the drip is coming from the portafilter seal (not the spout), the 8.5mm group gasket is worn. Replace every 12 months
- Shower screen: also check the dispersion block and shower screen — a cracked screen lets unfiltered water past the puck and drips continuously

Cooling Flush Technique (Appartamento, Mozzafiato — HX Machines)
Why it matters: Heat Exchanger machines run the brew water through a tube inside the steam boiler. At idle, that tube super-heats — a shot pulled "cold" from idle comes out at 220°F+ and tastes burnt. The cooling flush dumps the overheated water before the shot.
- Timing: 2–5 seconds of flush after 5+ min idle, shorter after short idle. Experiment with a thermometer-equipped portafilter to dial in your specific unit
- Amount: roughly 1–2 oz of flush water. You'll hear the thermosyphon "burp" — that's the cue the water has stabilized
- After flush, wait 30 seconds before pulling the shot — lets the group body re-equilibrate
- Pro tip: attach a blind portafilter for 15 seconds of pre-shot backflush instead of a cooling flush — pushes hot water back into the boiler rather than wasting it. Rocket's own trainers recommend this

Pressurestat Adjustment (Boiler Pressure 1–1.5 bar)
Why it matters: On HX machines, boiler pressure sets both the steam temperature AND the brew temperature (via the thermosyphon). Too low = weak steam and under-extracted shots; too high = burnt shots and dangerous steam.
- Target: 1.0–1.2 bar for a cooler brew profile (lighter roasts, modern 3rd-wave); 1.2–1.5 bar for classic Italian espresso and strong steam
- Adjustment: remove the top cover. The pressurestat is the cylindrical unit on top of the boiler with a tiny brass screw on the side
- Turn direction: clockwise raises the cut-out pressure (hotter), counterclockwise lowers it. 1/4 turn changes pressure by ~0.1 bar
- Wait 2 full heat cycles after each adjustment — the pressurestat has hysteresis and reads the true set point only after stabilizing
- Replace every 5 years — pressurestats drift and eventually fail. Rocket-spec Mater pressurestat is the factory part

R58 Dual Boiler Temperature Stability (PID Settings)
The advantage: The R58 separates brew (PID-controlled, ~200–203°F typical) from steam (~260°F). No thermosyphon math, no cooling flush. But the PID offset still needs dialing.
- Default brew temp: 199°F (92.8°C) from factory. For darker Italian roasts, drop to 197°F. For lighter single-origins, raise to 202°F
- PID offset: measure actual water temp at the puck with a Scace device or thermofilter. The sensor-to-group offset varies with ambient temp — typical is +5 to +8°F
- Steam boiler: runs at 1.5 bar (262°F). Adjust via menu — higher pressure = hotter, drier steam. Too low = wet steam that waters down milk
- Heat-up time: 25 minutes from cold to fully stable. Don't pull a shot before then — you'll get inconsistent temperature

Rocket R Nine One Pressure Profiling
What it does: The R Nine One is Rocket's flagship — a gear pump with programmable pressure profiles. You can pull shots with a classic 9-bar flat profile, a declining profile (long pre-infusion → 9 bar → taper to 6 bar), or a custom blooming profile.
- Profile save/load: up to 6 user profiles accessible via the front dial
- Start with factory profiles: "Classic Italian" (9 bar flat), "Modern" (declining), "Light Roast" (long pre-infusion at 3 bar, then 9 bar)
- Custom profile tips: start with a 6–10 second pre-infusion at 3 bar, ramp to 9 bar over 4 seconds, hold to target weight, then optional taper to 6 bar for the last 3 seconds
- If shots taste sour: increase pre-infusion time. Bitter: shorten pre-infusion. Weak: raise peak pressure or grind finer
- Firmware updates: check with Rocket for the latest — early R Nine One software had UI bugs that have since been patched

Vibration Pump vs. Rotary Pump (Model Differences & Lifespan)
Vibration pump (Appartamento, Mozzafiato Type V, R58, Cinquantotto):
- Ulka EX5 vibratory pump — ~$60 part, 15-year service life with filtered water
- Loud during shots (75 dB click-buzz) — expected; not a fault
- Can run dry briefly without damage (prime by opening the steam valve to purge air)
Rotary pump (Mozzafiato Type R, Giotto Cronometro R, R Nine One, Cinquantotto R):
- Procon or Fluid-o-Tech rotary — ~$220 part, 20+ year service life
- Quiet (55 dB hum), produces rock-steady pressure
- Requires plumbing to water line OR a Fluidica reservoir kit — not all rotary Rockets can run from the internal tank
- NEVER run a rotary dry — kills the pump instantly

Scale in Brass Boiler — Descaling Schedule & HX Flush
The problem: Rocket boilers are nickel-lined brass. More scale-tolerant than aluminum, but scale still clogs the E61 passages and the HX tube over time.
- Descale every 6–12 months with citric-acid descaler only — NEVER vinegar (etches nickel plating), NEVER CLR
- Filtered water is mandatory for long machine life. In the East Bay, use Third Wave Water, BWT Bestmax, or a reverse-osmosis remineralizer (never straight RO)
- HX flush: once a year, remove the mushroom valve and back-flush the HX tube with a descaler solution at low pressure
- If shots taste metallic or sour after descale: rinse with 3 full tanks of fresh water before your next shot

Portafilter Leak (Group Gasket & Shower Screen)
Symptom: water drips from between the portafilter and the group when pulling a shot, or the portafilter handle seats past the 6 o'clock mark.
- Group gasket (the rubber ring inside the group): 8mm or 8.5mm depending on model year. Replace every 12 months — it's consumable
- Replacement procedure: remove shower screen, pry out old gasket with a dental pick, seat new gasket, reinstall screen with new gasket seal
- Shower screen: replace every 6–12 months. A crusty screen disperses water unevenly and causes channeling
- If the portafilter still seats past 6 o'clock with a fresh gasket, the gasket is under-thickness — try an 8.5mm gasket if you had 8mm

No Steam Pressure
Possible causes: boiler scale, failed pressurestat, failed heating element, or tripped thermal fuse.
- Check gauge: with the machine hot, boiler gauge should read 1.0–1.5 bar. If it reads 0, the element isn't heating or the pressurestat isn't cutting in
- Pressurestat test: listen for the click at cut-in and cut-out. A silent pressurestat has failed
- Heating element: measure resistance (unplugged!) — should read ~15–20 ohms for a 1400W element. Open circuit = failed element
- Thermal fuse: located on the boiler body; fails open if the machine was ever run dry. Replacement is a bench job
- Steam pressure drops during use: expected during back-to-back milk steaming — boiler needs 1–2 min to recover. If it doesn't recover, the element is undersized (check spec vs. original) or the tank is empty

Unboxing + Commissioning (Mozzafiato Type V, Appartamento, etc.)
First-start procedure — don't skip this:
- Water: do NOT fill with unfiltered tap. Use filtered or remineralized water from day one. This single step doubles machine lifespan
- First boil: fill tank, power on, let boiler fill and pressurize. DO NOT pull a shot for the first 20 minutes — thermosyphon needs to stabilize
- Pull 2 flush cycles through the empty group head before the first shot — clears factory residue
- Steam wand: run steam for 10 seconds into a cloth before first milk — clears the wand of any shipping oils
- Break-in: expect the first 20–30 shots to be inconsistent as seals bed in and the grinder dial settles
