Jura Error 8 — What It Means & How to Fix
Clean Machine reminder on E-series, Z-series, Impressa, Ena: run the cycle and carry on
-
What Is Error 8?
Jura Error 8 — displayed as "Clean Machine" or simply "8" depending on model — is a scheduled maintenance reminder, not a fault. After a fixed number of brew cycles (typically 180–200 depending on your model's firmware), Jura's programming requires you to run a cleaning cycle with a Jura cleaning tablet. The machine parks itself and won't brew again until the cycle completes.
Good news: there's nothing broken. Run the cleaning cycle, the counter resets automatically, and you're back to normal operation. This is one of the easiest "errors" to clear on any espresso machine.

Affected Jura Models
- Jura E-series (E6, E8, E80, E85)
- Jura Z-series (Z6, Z8, Z10)
- Jura Impressa C, F, J, S, X, XJ, XS lines
- Jura Ena / Ena Micro
- Jura Giga 5, 6, W3
-
What Triggers Error 8
- Cleaning counter reached — the #1 cause; you've simply hit the scheduled clean interval
- Previous cleaning cycle interrupted — stopping mid-cycle prevents the counter reset
- Off-brand cleaning tablets — wrong tablet chemistry can leave residue and re-trigger early
- Rare: cleaning-counter sensor fault — on older machines, the counter can corrupt and demand constant cleaning
-
DIY Reset Procedure (Run the Cleaning Cycle)
- Empty the drip tray and grounds container (dump, rinse, reinstall)
- Fill the water tank to the MAX line
- Have one Jura cleaning tablet and a large container (~0.5L) ready
- From the menu, select Maintenance → Cleaning (older models: press and hold the Rinse/Clean button)
- Place the container under the coffee spout when prompted
- When the display reads "Add Tablet," drop the Jura tablet into the service chute (the small round opening near the bean hopper, NOT the coffee chute)
- Press OK — the cycle takes 15 minutes; do NOT interrupt
- Empty the container and drip tray when prompted; the display returns to the home screen when the counter has reset
-
If That Doesn't Work
- If Error 8 returns immediately after a completed cycle, your cleaning tablet may have been undetected — run again with a fresh genuine Jura tablet
- If the cycle itself halts mid-way, the water tank may have been below MIN — refill and restart
- If Error 8 persists across multiple completed cycles, the machine's cleaning-counter flag is stuck — requires technician reset via Jura service menu
- If you also see water pooling or other error codes, book service — a leak can mimic counter issues on some generations
-
When to Call Professional Service
- Error 8 appears within a day of a completed cleaning cycle
- Cleaning cycle won't start at all from the menu
- Tablet doesn't dissolve during the cycle (sits in the chute)
- Error 8 accompanies other codes (especially Error 16)
- Cleaning cycle completes but coffee still tastes bitter/off
