Jura Espresso Machine Troubleshooting Guide

Error Code 8 (Clean Alarm)
What it means: The machine has counted enough brews to trigger the cleaning-cycle reminder. It is NOT a fault code — it's a maintenance prompt. Until you run the cleaning cycle, the machine may refuse to brew.
Reset procedure:
- Purchase genuine Jura cleaning tablets (2-pack comes with the machine; available as refill)
- Place a 500ml+ container under the spouts
- Select the Cleaning program from the menu (wrench icon → Cleaning)
- When prompted, drop ONE cleaning tablet into the bypass doser (the funnel for pre-ground coffee)
- Let the full cycle complete — do not interrupt (~15 minutes)
- If Error 8 returns immediately after cleaning, the brew-group position sensor or the cycle counter chip is faulty
-
Error Code 6 (Brew Group Fault) — Jura Z6
What it means: The brew-group motor did not return the brew group to its home position within the expected time window. Common on high-mileage Z6 units.
Manual reset:
- Power off at the rocker switch on the back, wait 60 seconds, power on
- If error returns, open the bean hopper door and check that nothing is physically obstructing the brew group
- Run a cleaning cycle — sometimes coffee compaction prevents full brew-group travel
- If error persists after 2 resets, the brew-group motor or Hall sensor has failed — professional service required
-
Error Code 16 / "System Too Cold"
What it means: The boiler/thermoblock temperature sensor reads below the minimum brew threshold. Usually one of three things: cold environment, thermoblock failure, or temperature sensor wiring fault.
- Move the machine to a warmer room (above 50°F / 10°C) — garages in winter frequently trigger this
- Let the machine warm up for 30 minutes after power-on before attempting a brew
- If the error persists in a warm room, the thermoblock heating element or NTC sensor has likely failed
- On older Impressa models, the TCO (thermal cutoff) fuse may have tripped — requires internal service
-
Coffee Coming Out of Wrong Spout
Common causes: Motorized spout misaligned, scale clogging one side of the dual outlet, or coffee residue blocking one channel.
Recentering procedure:
- Remove the spout assembly by pulling down firmly
- Soak in warm water with Jura milk-system cleaner or Cafiza for 15 minutes
- Scrub both channels with a small brush — coffee oils build up and bias flow to one side
- Reinsert the spout and listen for the positioning motor to cycle on power-up
- On E8 and Z6 models: use the service menu calibration routine to recenter the spout electronically
- If only one side still dispenses, descale the machine — scale blocks one channel of the dual-outlet valve
-
Brew Group Won't Rotate / Stuck
Why it happens: Coffee compaction, scale-locked gears, or motor failure.
- Power off the machine fully at the rear rocker switch, then power back on — most Juras self-home the brew group on boot
- Run 2 back-to-back cleaning cycles with Jura tablets — this lubricates and flushes compacted grounds
- If the brew group still won't move, DO NOT disassemble — most Jura brew groups are not user-removable and will void your warranty if forced
- Book service — we have the Jura service menu code and can manually cycle the brew group to diagnose motor vs. sensor failure
-
Descaling Light Stays On After Descale
Why it happens: The descale cycle wasn't completed fully, the rinse cycle after descale was skipped, or the descale counter didn't reset.
- Rerun the descale cycle from the menu — do not power off mid-cycle
- Use only Jura descaling tablets (2 tablets dissolved in a full tank). Generic citric acid leaves the counter unreset on some models
- Complete the post-descale rinse when prompted — skipping it leaves the counter active
- If the light still won't clear, enter the service menu and manually reset the descale counter (we can walk you through this over the phone)
-
Weak Coffee / No Crema
Common causes: Grinder set too coarse, worn burrs, bypass doser leaking, or brew-group seals worn.
- Dial the grinder one step finer (adjustment dial is inside the bean hopper — only adjust while grinder is running)
- Increase the "Coffee strength" setting in the menu
- Check the bypass doser flap — if it doesn't seal, grounds leak and dilute the brew
- Burrs are typically replaced at 5,000–8,000 brews; signs of wear include inconsistent shot times and gray crema
- If shots pour in under 15 seconds despite fine grind, brew-group seals are worn — professional service
-
Milk Frother (Fine Foam, HP Frother) Issues
Common causes: Milk residue in the connector tube, clogged air-intake hole, or scale in the steam circuit.
- After every milk drink, run the "Rinse milk system" cycle (takes 30 seconds)
- Daily: run the Jura milk-system cleaning cycle using Jura milk cleaner
- Weekly: disassemble the frother and soak all parts in warm water + milk cleaner for 20 minutes
- Inspect the air-intake hole (tiny pinhole on the side of the frother) — it must be clear for aeration
- If froth is thin even after cleaning, descale the machine — scale blocks the steam jet
-
Mold Inside Machine (Common Issue)
Why it happens: Jura machines have internal drainage paths that stay damp. If the drip tray is not emptied regularly, or the grounds container is left full for days, mold grows inside the chassis.
- Empty the drip tray and grounds container daily, even if not full
- Remove the tray and grounds container at night to let the interior dry out
- Wipe the interior cavity with a dry cloth weekly
- If mold is visible: run 2 back-to-back cleaning cycles, then a full descale, then inspect again
- Deep internal mold (in the pipes or brew group) requires professional cleaning — we charge a standard shop rate for full disassembly and sanitization
