Saeco Error Code 268 — Clear Ventilate Error
Complete guide: what it means, quick fixes, and when you need professional service
-
What Is Error 268?
Error 268 on a Saeco super-automatic machine is a ventilation/air-lock error. The label on the display usually reads "Clear Ventilate Error Code" or simply "268". It means the machine's water circuit has air trapped in it and the pump cannot build pressure to prime the boiler.
This is NOT a serious fault — in most cases it's a simple air lock that you can clear in under 2 minutes. However, if priming doesn't clear it, it usually points to a failed internal component that requires service.

Affected Saeco Models
Error 268 appears on Saeco super-automatics built on the "Royal" hydraulic platform, including:
- Saeco Royal One-Touch Cappuccino
- Saeco Royal Cappuccino
- Saeco Incanto Executive
- Saeco Syntia
- Saeco Odea Go
- Some Saeco Gran Baristo variants
-
Common Causes
- Water tank recently refilled — air enters the intake line when the tank empties completely
- Hot-water dispenser not primed — after moving the machine or descaling, the hot-water circuit loses prime
- Internal hose blocked or kinked — often happens after reassembly from a repair
- Priming pump failure — the secondary pump that handles the hot-water/steam circuit has failed (requires professional service)
-
DIY Reset Procedure (Try This First)
In 80% of cases, the following steps will clear Error 268 completely:
- Ensure the water tank is full to the MAX line
- Reseat the water tank firmly — press down until you feel the valve click
- Place a large mug under the hot-water dispenser wand (not the coffee spout)
- Open the hot-water dispenser — let it run until water flows steadily (should take 15–30 seconds)
- Power cycle the machine: turn off, wait 30 seconds, turn on
- If Error 268 returns, repeat steps 3–5 up to three times
-
If That Doesn't Work
If Error 268 persists after three full priming cycles, the problem is likely hardware:
- The internal priming pump (a secondary pump on Royal-platform machines) may have failed. This pump is responsible for filling the hot-water/steam circuit
- An air lock may have formed in the steam boiler that manual priming can't dislodge — requires bleed-valve service
- The brew group may not be fully seating, which can cascade to a ventilation error on some firmware versions — remove and reinsert it, ensuring the arrows align
- A blocked or kinked internal hose (sometimes from a previous repair) will prevent priming — requires opening the chassis to inspect
-
When to Call Professional Service
You need professional service if:
- Error 268 returns after 3 complete priming cycles
- Water flow from the hot-water dispenser sounds weak, sputtering, or cuts out mid-flow
- Other error codes appear alongside 268 (especially E03 pump fault or E13 water circuit)
- You hear unusual pump sounds — strained buzzing, clicking, or silence when the pump should be running
- The machine was recently descaled and the error appeared immediately after

Kanen Coffee Services This Repair
Kanen Coffee in Berkeley, CA services Error 268 on all affected Saeco models. Typical turnaround is 3–5 business days. Repair cost runs $150–250 depending on the specific cause:
- Priming pump replacement: ~$180 (part + labor)
- Internal flush & air-lock clearing: ~$150
- Steam-boiler bleed service: ~$200
- Full water-circuit overhaul: ~$250
We give a firm quote after diagnosis. If we can clear the error with a priming routine in-shop, the charge is bench-rate only.
